NIGERIA: Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has threatened to kill anyone who rigs the 2027 general elections, warning that electoral offenders would face violent resistance rather than legal action.

Omo-Agege, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and a prospective candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial District, made the threat while addressing a political gathering, reports Daily Trust.

“I want to make the news again. Anybody who rigs the election on that day, we will kill him! If you don’t value your life, come and rig the election.

“They’re rigging your future. They’re rigging the future of your children. We’re waiting for them. Let them try it. It is rig and die. We’re going to give them aura for aura. There’s no court this time. We’re going to fight,” he said.

The former senator’s remarks come amid preparations for the 2027 general elections and renewed political competition in Delta State, where he is seeking a return to the Senate.

Omo-Agege contested the 2023 Delta State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was then the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oborevwori has since defected to the APC and is seeking re-election on the platform of the ruling party.

Following the governor’s defection, Omo-Agege also sought to return to the Senate under the APC but lost the party’s ticket to the incumbent senator, David Dafinone.

He subsequently defected to the NDC, declaring his intention to challenge Dafinone for the Delta Central senatorial seat.

Announcing his defection in May, Omo-Agege said the decision followed weeks of reflection, consultations and discussions with political associates, supporters and community stakeholders.

“Across all these engagements, one truth stood out: Deltans want leadership that listens first, acts with integrity, and delivers results that can be seen and felt in daily life,” he said.

He also acknowledged the NDC leadership, including its founder, Senator Seriake Dickson; National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas; presidential aspirant Peter Obi; and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the party and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

Omo-Agege said he believed the party offered a credible alternative built on inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation and true federalism.

“The NDC represents that kind of leadership. It is a party built on the principles of inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism,” he said.

He added that the platform offered an opportunity to advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria.

His latest remarks have raised concerns over political violence and the protection of electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 polls. Under Nigeria’s electoral framework, election-related disputes and allegations of rigging are addressed through established legal and institutional processes.
