CAIRO, Egypt — Nigeria has been drawn alongside co-hosts Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea Bissau in Group L of the qualification series for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The draw ceremony took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo, where the 48 participating teams were divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the tournament scheduled to hold from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
The Super Eagles have previous qualifying history with all three opponents in Group L.
Nigeria defeated Madagascar home and away during the qualifying campaign for the 2012 AFCON. Against Guinea Bissau, both teams shared honours during the qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, with Guinea Bissau winning in Abuja before Nigeria secured victory in Bissau.
Tanzania also faced Nigeria during the qualification race for the 2017 AFCON. Both teams played out a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam before the Super Eagles claimed a 1-0 victory in Uyo courtesy of a long-range strike from Kelechi Iheanacho.
