Sport First with Kennysport
Sporting Lagos are firmly focused on securing an immediate return to the Nigeria Premier Football League after their relegation at the end of the 2023/24 season. Despite a brief first appearance in the top flight, the club has embraced a rebuilding phase driven by structure, professionalism, and a strong connection with its growing fanbase.
A Club in Rebuild Mode
Rather than chasing quick fixes, Sporting Lagos have committed to long-term sustainability. Their approach continues to set them apart within Nigerian football, with a clear emphasis on organization, player development, and infrastructure. Strategic additions such as Junior Lokosa from Remo Stars and Olisema Ekene from Warri Wolves reflect the club’s intent to address the inconsistencies that led to relegation and strengthen their push for promotion.
Historic Achievements and Rising Profile
The club has also made headlines beyond league football. Founded two decades ago, Sporting Lagos recently reached a major milestone by winning the prestigious Gothia Cup (U17 category) in 2024. Their victory over FC Tokyo marked a historic moment, making them the first Nigerian team to lift the trophy under the guidance of coach Jeffrey Buter.
This success highlights the strength of their academy system, which continues to serve as the backbone of the club’s philosophy.
Strong Start in the NNL Campaign
Following restructuring ahead of the 2024/25 season, Sporting Lagos began their Nigeria National League campaign in emphatic fashion, recording a 4–0 victory over Solution FC. This result reinforced confidence in their academy-driven model.
After 14 matches in Group B, the team has accumulated 24 points from 7 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses, placing them second behind Akwa United. A narrow 1–0 defeat in Uyo against the league leaders served as a reminder of the fine margins in the promotion race.
Remaining Fixtures
Sporting Lagos face a crucial run of matches that will define their season:
vs Rovers (Home) – March 22, 2026
vs Stoners (Away) – March 29, 2026
vs First Bank (Home) – April 5, 2026
vs Osun United (Away) – April 12, 2026
Each fixture presents an opportunity to secure vital points in their push for promotion.
Dreams Within Reach
Led by founder Shola Akinade and backed by their passionate supporters, Sporting Lagos are closer than ever to returning to the NPFL. Their journey has already featured notable achievements, including success in the Naija Super 8 under coach Paul Offor, and now a renewed promotion charge under Jeffrey Buter.
The Big Question
With momentum building and only a few games left, the key question remains: can Sporting Lagos complete their comeback and secure promotion?
Their current position keeps them firmly in contention, but consistency in these final fixtures will be decisive. If they can convert performances into maximum points, their return to the NPFL may not just be a dream—but a reality.
For now, the journey continues, and all eyes remain on Sporting Lagos as they chase promotion.
