Lagos Govt To Enforce Regulation, Licensing On Packaged ‘Pure Water’ Products

KUNLE OLUTAYO

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission says it will begin to enforce its mandate to regulate and license packaged water services to ensure improvement in water products for consumers in the state.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs Funke Adepoju, stated this at a meeting with executive members of the Association for Table Water Producers (ATWAP), in Alausa, Ikeja.

The meeting was organised by the Commission to reinforce the guidelines for packaged water services and the urgent need for compliance with the regulations governing its operations.

Mrs. Adepoju restated that the guidelines issued by the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission in pursuance of the Environmental Management Protection Law of 2017 shall apply to packaged water services operators in Lagos State and shall be interpreted by the Law.

“We must continue to work together to ensure that anyone or organisation involved in water provision delivers wholesome water to Lagosians,” she said.

Some of the provisions of the guidelines include the registration and licensing of producers and facilities to compliant operators as the mark of quality assurance to be conspicuously displayed in their premises and delivery vehicles. All the processes from registration to application for license to generation of unique identity, uploading of documents, and payment processes will be automated.

She informed the association about ongoing initiatives on introducing plaques of certification to licensed and compliant operators as a mark of quality assurance to be conspicuously displayed in their premises and on delivery vehicles. All the processes from registration to application for license to generation of unique identity, uploading of documents and payment processes will be automated.

In her response, the Chairperson of the Association, Mrs. Omolabake Mosaku, commended the Commission for its open door policy and expressed the willingness as a Body to continue to cooperate with the Lagos State Government.

In her words: “As law-abiding citizens, we are excited about the proposed plaques of quality assurance and are ready to comply with the Law geared towards best practices and improved service delivery as we work closely with the Commission through enhanced coordination of our members “.

The meeting is part of strategies by the Commission to reinforce the importance of compliance to the regulations and guidelines for operators of packaged water services in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission was established under the Environmental Protection Law of 2017 to provide standards, guidelines and regulations on the quality, price and reliability of water service provision.
