Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Brymo Dominate Nominations At Headies 2022

…As Davido, Burna Boy, Others Battle For African Artiste of the Year Award

Nominees for the 2022 edition of the Headies were on Tuesday announced on the award organisers’ official Instagram page.  The 2022 edition of the Headies awards is set to hold in September at the COBB Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, USA.

This year, Grammy-winning Beninese singer, Angelique Kidjo, will receive the Headies Hall of Fame award.  According to the organisers, the Hall of Fame special recognition was bestowed on an individual of African descent who has made excellent and “outstanding impact to the African entertainment industry, home and abroad.”

Angelique Kidjo will receive this year’s Headies Hall of Fame award. Past winners in this category include Femi Kuti, Wasiu Ayinde K1, Sir Shina Peters, King Sunny Ade, Sir Victor Uwaifo and 2Face Idibia

Asides the Hall of Fame recognition, some individuals were given special recognition for “excellence and outstanding impact to the entertainment industry within the year under review” in this edition.

Recipients of such recognition include Burna Boy’s mum and manager, Bose Ogulu; Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are and 2Baba’s manager, Efe Omorogbe.

Some international artistes were also recognised for their “outstanding impact to the Nigerian entertainment industry.” They are Haitian musician, Wyclef Jean; American-Senegalese singer, Akon; and American rapper, Diddy.

This year, artistes with the highest nominations were Ayra Starr, Brymo and Adekunle Gold. The list also featured some first timers like Portable and  Magixx.

Wizkid was nominated in eight categories including Artiste of the year and African Artiste of the year categories.

Other artistes that made the nomination list were Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Johnny Drille, Tiwa Savage, Simi, Olamide as well as Femi and Made Kuti.

Celebrating his double nomination. fast rising Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, said he worked for the nominations.

Portable got two nominations – ‘Best Street-Hop Artiste’ and ‘Rookie of the Year’

Sharing on his Instagram page, the Zazuu Zeh singer posted, “I know I worked for this and I know it’s for me based on believe. The Headies don show love . Akoi Grace King. The Headies (originally called the Hip Hop World Awards) is a music awards show established in 2006 by Ayo Animashaun’s Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.
