WEMBLEY, England – Hull City are back in the Premier League — and Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi played a huge role in the historic achievement.

The Super Eagles star celebrated with joy after Hull City secured promotion to the Premier League with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship Play-off Final at Wembley Stadium. The famous win confirmed Hull City’s return to England’s top flight for the first time since the 2016/2017 season.

Semi Ajayi was one of the key figures behind Hull City’s successful campaign. The experienced Nigerian defender produced a commanding performance in the final, helping his side keep a crucial clean sheet on one of the biggest stages in English football.

Ajayi’s journey has been one of hard work and consistency. He once featured as a trialist for Arsenal’s U21 side in a match against Blackburn before building his professional career step by step. The versatile defender later joined West Bromwich Albion in 2019, where he spent several successful seasons before making the move to Hull City on June 19, 2025.

He made his Hull City debut on August 9, 2025, in a goalless draw against Coventry City, and quickly became an important part of the team’s defense.

Since arriving at the club, Ajayi has made 30 appearances, scoring two goals and helping Hull City maintain 10 clean sheets during the campaign. His defensive strength was vital throughout the season, recording an impressive 71.43% ground duel success rate and registering 127 clearances.

Beyond club football, Semi Ajayi has also remained an important figure for Nigeria. He received his first Super Eagles call-up in 2018 under former coach Gernot Rohr and made his debut in a friendly match against Seychelles. Since then, the defender has earned 46 caps for Nigeria, scoring once and representing the country at the 2019 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Known for his versatility, experience, and leadership, Ajayi continues to prove himself as one of Nigeria’s dependable defenders both in England and on the international stage.

With Hull City now promoted, the Premier League will once again witness a stronger Nigerian presence next season as Semi Ajayi joins other Super Eagles stars competing in the world’s biggest football league.

Nigerian players continue to make history across Europe — and Semi Ajayi has now added another memorable chapter to that growing success story.
