ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a brief ceremony at the State House in Abuja.

The event, which took place around 4 p.m. in the President’s office, was attended by top government officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would have attained the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, under the amended Police Act, which allows Inspectors-General of Police to serve a four-year tenure irrespective of age, he could remain in office until 2030.

President Tinubu personally pinned the new insignia on Disu’s uniform and praised outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun for his service and contributions to national security.

The decoration ceremony followed Egbetokun’s resignation, which he submitted to the President on Tuesday, citing pressing family matters that require his full attention.
