Ruben Amorim was sent his marching orders shortly after choosing to publicly challenge the Manchester United hierarchy.

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.

The Red Devils are currently sitting 6th in the Premier League following a topsy-turvy first half to the 2025/26 campaign under Amorim.

Although results have improved since last season, when United finished 15th, United have remained painfully inconsistent after missing multiple opportunities to get into the Premier League’s top four.

However, Amorim challenged Ineos after United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds on Sunday.

The ex-United head coach was dismissed 17 hours later as his job became untenable.

Darren Fletcher will step in as interim coach for the upcoming two matches, with United planning a permanent appointment in the summertime.

Ruben Amorim upset Ineos by criticising Man Utd players

Now that Amorim has been sacked at United, there will be a bombardment of stories investigating the fallout at Old Trafford that led to an unhappy end for the Portuguese coach.

Amorim was subject to criticism for multiple reasons during his time at United. The results were dire, the football wasn’t much better, and there were questions over his appetite to respect club traditions by prioritising the development of Academy players.

The decision to regularly overlook Kobbie Mainoo in midfield and persist with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation also led to criticism.

According to The Sun, United chiefs were unhappy with Amorim’s criticism of academy players and first-team star Patrick Dorgu.

Amorim’s criticism of Harry Amass and Chido Obi struck a nerve with the club hierarchy, who didn’t appreciate the harsh assessment of Dorgu when he said, “You can feel the anxiety” whenever the Denmark international receives the ball.

It is understood that Amorim wasn’t happy with the culture that exists in the United Academy, with the belief that there is “entitlement” among the hopeful prospects.

The report also outlines that United were unimpressed with Amorim’s reaction to feedback and claim that he became more emotional and reactive.

Amorim had crossed a line as far as Ineos were concerned. This may give us an idea about when club chiefs started noticing red flags with the man they thought was best to replace Erik ten Hag.

Young players given debuts by Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Amorim gave eight debuts to young players in his 14 months as United head coach.

The list includes Amass, Obi, Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fredricson, Jack Fletcher, Godwill Kukonki, Shea Lacey, and Bendito Mantato.

It remains to be seen if Fletcher will give any debuts while in charge of the first team, with his other twin son, Tyler Fletcher, yet to make a senior appearance.

Tyler previously made the bench under Amorim, so it will be intriguing to see how Fletcher manages the situation with United without several players due to injury and AFCON.
