Queen Latifah, First Female Rapper Inducted Into National Recording Registry

Dana Elaine Owens (better known by the stage name Queen Latifah) has become the first female rapper to be inducted into the National Recording Registry in the USA.

The National Recording Registry, which was created in 2000, is a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”

The 53-year-old entertainer is surprised to hear she’s the first female rapper to be so honored.

“Wow…this is history,” she said. “I’m surprised that I’m the first woman, to be honest with you.

“Hip-hop is just too big, and so many came before me. So thank you to them for inspiring me, to put me in a position to do this.”

This is yet another milestone that Queen Latifah has achieved since she burst into the scene in 1989.

Her third album, “Black Reign” (1993), was the first album by a solo female rapper to receive a gold certification.

In 1998, she was the first rapper to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show.

In 2006, she became the first hip hop artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She is also the first female rapper to cross over into TV & film.

Small wonder she is known as the “First Lady of Hip-Hop”.
