PORTUGAL: On Wednesday, Portugal and Nigeria faced off in a friendly match as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup. In a tightly contested and high-pressure encounter, Portugal secured a narrow victory ahead of their debut in the global tournament.
Portugal and Nigeria played out an intense first half in this warm-up for the 2026 Mundial, characterized by shifting momentum and several clear-cut opportunities. Early on, Cristiano Ronaldo tried his luck from outside the box, and Portugal maintained the pressure with dangerous surges from João Félix, Bruno Fernandes, and Trincão, alongside a brilliant save from goalkeeper Okoye to deny the Portuguese attack.
In the 22nd minute, Portugal opened the scoring through Pedro Neto. After a move built down the left flank by Dalot, he found the forward, who fired a cross-shot to make it 1-0. The Portuguese side remained on top, creating further chances from set-pieces and shots inside the area, including a header from Cristiano Ronaldo and a powerful strike from Bruno Fernandes, both saved by the Nigerian defense.
Nigeria responded and equalized in the 37th minute via Akor Adams, who capitalized on an assist from Dele-Bashiru, beat the marking of Gonçalo Inácio and Dalot, and finished into the corner, leaving Diogo Costa with no chance. In the closing stages, Portugal pushed to regain the lead, but the score remained 1-1 at the interval following three minutes of stoppage time.
Second half: Tactical changes and increased pressure
The second half of the Amistosos Selecciones match began with numerous changes on both sides. Portugal overhauled their lineup with nine substitutions, including the introductions of João Félix, Bernardo Silva, Nuno Mendes, and Rúben Neves, while Nigeria also shuffled their squad to maintain the game’s intensity. The match opened up, with the Portuguese side taking control of the pitch.
Portugal’s pressure intensified quickly. João Félix was a central figure in the opening minutes, forcing a save from Okoye with a long-range effort before narrowly missing the crossbar shortly after. Despite Portuguese dominance, Nigeria remained resilient and dangerous on the counter-attack. Cristiano Ronaldo had a golden opportunity when he found himself free in the box, but he failed to convert, squandering a clear chance.
The Portuguese persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute, when Francisco Conceição beat his marker and unleashed a thunderous strike to turn the game in favor of Portugal. Nigeria attempted to respond with attacking substitutions and late pressure, but to no avail. Deep into stoppage time, at 90+4, the referee blew the final whistle, confirming a narrow 1-2 victory for Portugal in an intense test before the tournament.
