As the countdown to Edo State Gubernatorial Elections in 2024 begins, and as permutations, predictions, projections and expectations rise, many political observers and analysts wonder how the much-anticipated polls would pan out, come next year.

As political parties and candidates gear up for what is expected to be a fierce contest to seize the reins of the state; expectedly, lobbying, negotiations, agreements, alignments of various degrees and fall outs would be the order of the day, as is usually the case with elections of such magnitude.

One name that is beginning to ring a bell and fast getting the attention of many, is Peter Okoeguale.

The Uromi, Esan North-East LGA-born  philanthropist and businessman has contributed immensely to educational development in the state; awarding series of scholarships to students in all the senatorial districts in the state.

Okoeguale has made several meaningful donations to many charity organisations and says he is not thinking of letting go anytime soon.

According to him: “I have always believed in touching lives and making people happy. Seeing the suffering of my people moves me to tears. I have resolved to ensure that children who are out of school get quality education and those at the lowest ebb are lifted as much as possible.”

On venturing into politics, he says that the Edo political scene needs a breath of fresh air. He says he has the wherewithal to make a difference and bring something new to the table, which the Edo people really need at this time.

“I believe I have something new and different to offer the Edo people. The political landscape needs a breath of fresh air. I represent that newness and freshness. Edo people deserve the best and I am ready to give it to them.

“In terms of my chances come 2024, I am hopeful because anything I set out to do, I always put my all in it and ensure that I succeed. Like I said, our people need true change and I am ready to give it to them. It is achievable. We can do more in the education sector, more can be done in infrastructure development; we can equally do more in terms of employment for our youths. Women and children need to be empowered. There’s so much we can do and I dare say that I am poised to contribute to that change,” Okoeguale said.

Only recently, the inaugural briefing of some stakeholders in Edo-South regarding Okoeguale’s governorship ambition took place in Benin, under the leadership of Mr Uyi Sorae, the Edo-South Coordinator for Edo Mandate for Viable Democracy.

The meeting deliberated on a number of issues and concluded that there was no better time than now to support and facilitate everything possible to “make sure our young, vibrant and dynamic Mr Peter Okoeguale takes the mantle of leadership to lead Edo State to recover its lost glory.”

At the occasion, the National Coordinator of Edo Mandate for Viable Democracy, Mr Elliot Imoloamen, was applauded for his visionary leadership, support, continued pledge and loyalty to Mr Peter Okoeguale.

According to Imoloamen, “Okoeguale has the capacity and capability to rule Edo State. He is dynamic, fresh and unique when you consider those who may be vying for the exalted seat of Edo State Governor. He could be termed a new kid on the block and indeed a joker set to shock the so-called experienced campaigners.

“The last general elections in the country has proven that the youths need a change and are ready to put their money where their mouth is; that is, to vote in a candidate whom they believe can restore their hope in this country, revive the economy and bring back the lost glory of the land. I tell you, Okoeguale is the man for the job!”

It would be recalled that the 2020 Edo State Gubernatorial Election occurred on September 19, 2020. Incumbent PDP Governor, Godwin Obaseki, won re-election for a second term, defeating APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu and several minor party candidates.

Obaseki received 57.3 per cent of votes cast.

Obaseki emerged unopposed in the PDP gubernatorial primary, after all the aspirants stepped down. He picked Philip Shaibu as his running mate.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu was the APC candidate with Audi Ganiyu as his running mate.

Mabel Oboh was the ADC candidate. Iboi Lucky Emmanuel stood in for ADP in the polls, while Osifo Uhun-Ekpenma Isaiah represented LP. 14 candidates contested in the election, 12 were male, while two were female. Two of the deputy governorship candidates were equally female.
