GLASGOW, Scotland – Nigerian athlete Esther Nworgu set a new Commonwealth Games record in Glasgow on Friday in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event with a phenomenal lift of 123 kg, scoring 119 points.

With this feat, she claimed the West African nation’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2026 Games being held in Scotland.

The occasion was even sweeter for Team Nigeria as Esther Oyema completed a dominant Nigerian 1-2 finish by taking the silver medal with a best lift of 125.0kg (115.5 points).

England’s Olivia Broome went home with the bronze following a lift of 119 kg and 106.6 points, while Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki, England’s Charlotte McGuinness, and India’s Suman Devi finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

Nworgu’s victory came just hours after veteran para-powerlifter Roland Ezuruike opened Nigeria’s medal account with a silver in the men’s lightweight event, ensuring the country’s campaign got off to an encouraging start.
