LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Government has unveiled the Lagos Green Kiosk Initiative, a new urban renewal programme expected to enhance the city’s aesthetics, promote renewable energy adoption and generate approximately N1.28 billion annually for the state.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Abiodun Oluyinka Olumide, announced the initiative on Friday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, where he presented the scorecard of the ministry’s activities under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
Olumide said the initiative was introduced by the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA) as part of efforts to improve physical orderliness and transform the management of informal urban spaces across the state.
According to him, the Green Kiosk project is designed to create a more organised and environmentally sustainable urban environment while reducing dependence on traditional energy sources.
“The Lagos Green Kiosk initiative was introduced to improve physical orderliness, enhance urban aesthetics, promote renewable energy usage and reduce deforestation. The initiative has the potential to generate approximately N1.28 billion annually,” he said.
The commissioner explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise informal commercial spaces, encourage cleaner energy alternatives and create a more attractive urban landscape in line with global sustainability standards.
He noted that LASISMA has intensified efforts to regulate and transform informal urban corridors through strategic planning, environmental management and innovative interventions aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.
“As part of these efforts, the agency continued real-time data collection on informal urban activities, monitored setbacks and roadsides, and strengthened collaborations with several government agencies to ensure coordinated urban management,” he said.
Olumide disclosed that LASISMA also developed action plans for key urban corridors, including the AIT Powerline High Tension Corridor, New Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge Emerging Space, Agric-Isawo Informal Urban Space, Itamaga-Elepe-Maya Corridor and Ogolonto-Ipakodo Corridor.
He said the intervention plans involved drone mapping, reconnaissance surveys, stakeholder engagements and enforcement activities aimed at preventing encroachment and improving physical orderliness within these locations.
In another innovation targeted at environmental sustainability, the commissioner revealed that the agency introduced the Hybrid Solar Powered Air Compressor Pumping Machine (HYPAC) for vulcanisers.
According to him, the technology is expected to reduce air and noise pollution, improve operational efficiency and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly practices among roadside businesses.
Olumide said the initiatives underscore the state’s commitment to building a sustainable and climate-resilient city through innovative urban management strategies.
He added that the government would continue to explore environmentally friendly solutions that support economic growth while preserving the urban environment.
The commissioner further noted that the state remains focused on transforming Lagos into a globally competitive smart city through strategic investments in sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy and improved urban planning systems.
