ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance has sparked a wave of mixed reactions across Nigeria’s political and economic circles.

The Matrix Newspaper reports that Oyedele, a respected economist and public policy expert from Ondo State, was nominated by Tunubu to replace Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning — her third portfolio in the current administration.

Oyedele’s nomination, now awaiting Senate confirmation, is widely seen as a test of Tinubu’s economic management strategy.

If confirmed, he will be tasked with balancing Nigeria’s pressing fiscal needs — from debt management to revenue mobilization — while navigating political expectations.

Expectedly, the nomination has sparked a wave of reaction from several quarters as allegations of nepotism once more erupted on social media over the appointment. Others are also quick to hail the appointment. According to Dr Nwanchukwu Anakwenze, a 2023 presidential aspirant under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) he hailed the appointment saying Oyedele led the overhaul of our tax system with clarity, courage, and competence.

“Taiwo has served our nation diligently as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, leading the overhaul of our tax system with clarity, courage, and competence. “His depth as an economist, accountant, and public policy expert will strengthen our fiscal architecture at a critical time.

“Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite will continue to serve the nation as Minister of State at the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. Her experience across portfolios remains valuable to our reform agenda.

“We are building a team defined by expertise, discipline, and results. The work continues” he wrote on his verified X platform.

Another user, Dr Toks hailed the appointment saying the government policies need proper implementation. “The Tax Act and the Executive Order 9 need proper implementation. Mr. Taiwo Oyedele is the End to End guy. He will likely succeed Mr. Wale Edun in Asiwaju’s second term cabinet. I wish him the best”.

According to social media critic, Daniel Regha, Oyedele’s appointment if it scales through will put the Finance ministry in the hands of two South Westerners, a development he critised. “Tinubu just nominated Taiwo Oyedele as the Minister Of State For Finance, he’s from the South-west; Meanwhile the current Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is also from South-west.

“So if this appointment scales through, both posts will be held by South westerners. Let’s leave the failure of this govt aside, are you telling me that there is no-one from the other five regions that is qualified to occupy that post?” he asked rhetorically.

His appointment has also not gone down well with Hon Rilwan who described it as absolute disaster colored with impunity.

“From Wale Edun and Doris to Wale Edun and Taiwo Oyedele as the two ministers overseeing our finance and economic activities is not a progress but an absolute disaster colored with impunity: Nigeria is never going to make it under the current administration.

“Tinubu needs a spokesperson/spin doctor who can confidently deceive Nigerians with a composed demeanor, something Wale Edun and Doris has not managed to do for Tinubu in the last 3 years.

“If we genuinely care about Nigeria, Tinubu must not advance beyond 2027. Factos!” Amid nepotism accusation against Tinubu’s government, the Federal Character Commission (FCC) has inaugurated its committee on works, transport and aviation to monitor compliance with the federal character principle in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

The committee is one of 25 operational panels recently approved at the commission’s weekly plenary presided over by Ayo Omidiran, executive chairman of the FCC.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Peter Eze, chairman of the committee, said the panel’s mandate is to ensure strict compliance with the laws establishing the commission, particularly in MDAs under the federal ministries of works, transport and aviation.

He described the federal character principle as a constitutional directive aimed at preventing the domination of public institutions by any region or group.

“The laws establishing the Federal Character Commission are clear. Our duty is not merely ceremonial. We are here to ensure full implementation and compliance,” Eze said.

“Every Nigerian, irrespective of tribe, gender, or region, deserves equal opportunity in public service.”

The committee chairman said effective enforcement of the commission’s mandate would promote fairness, strengthen national unity and deepen citizens’ sense of belonging.

He assured that the committee would carry out its oversight functions with transparency, accountability and dedication to constitutional order.
