NIGERIA: Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has spoken openly about her long-standing marriage to legendary actor Olu Jacobs, sharing personal details about how their relationship began and why she believes marrying an older man had its advantages.
The 64-year-old actress made the revelation during a recent appearance on Your View, where she reflected on her love story and nearly four decades of marriage. According to her, the age gap between her and her husband created a level of patience and understanding, especially in the early years of their union.
Silva recalled that they first met while working on a stage production. She said everyone on set knew that the famous Olu Jacobs was coming, except her.
‘Yes, we met on stage, and when we met on a movie set, everybody knew it was the great Olu Jacobs who was coming, except me,” she said with a smile.
She explained that when he eventually arrived, they got along easily and built a natural connection. However, she did not immediately realise how much older he was.
“When he came, we got on very well and it was after we started dating that I discovered his age because he looked so good,” she added.
According to Silva, Jacobs was certain about his feelings from the beginning. For her, it was a slower process.
“For him, it was love at first sight but for me, it wasn’t,” she admitted.
The couple got married in 1985 when she was 24 and he was 44, marking a 20-year age difference that has drawn public attention over the years. Looking back, Silva suggested that the gap in age worked in her favour.
“This older men allows you to get away with a lot of things,” she said humorously.
Although she did not go into full details, her tone suggested that maturity and life experience may have played a role in the stability of their relationship.
