Joe Joyce is set to return to the ring next month after a lengthy stretch of inactivity.
The Olympic silver medallist hasn’t stepped between the ropes since April 2025, when he was outpointed by short-notice opponent Filip Hrgovic.
15 months removed from that night, on July 11, Joyce will attempt to revive his career with a clash against unbeaten Russian Artem Suslenkov.
The bout will take place at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia, on the undercard of an IBA show headlined by Murat Gassiev’s WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight title defence against Tony Yoka.
Joyce (16-4, 15KOs) was once considered the boogeyman of the heavyweight division.
However, back-to-back stoppage defeats to Zhilei Zhang in 2023 saw his aura of invincibility fade.
Since then, Joyce has won just one of his last three fights and can’t afford another setback at 40 years old.
“I’ve spent the last year preparing, training and wanting to be back in the ring,” said Joyce.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to travel to Russia and challenge for the WBA Continental Heavyweight title on July 11.
“Thank you to IBA Pro for the opportunity. My team and I are locked in, and Moscow should get ready for a big performance.”
Who is Artem Suslenkov?
Suslenkov (14-0, 9KOs) has compiled his unbeaten record against mostly European and fringe world-level opposition.
In April, he halted former cruiserweight world title challenger Artur Mann inside three rounds after retiring Agron Smakici on his stool last October.
12 months prior, he was extended the distance by Christian Hammer, whom Joyce blew away in four rounds in 2022.
Suslenvok is currently ranked No.9 by the WBA at heavyweight, but is unrated by the other three major sanctioning bodies.
“Joyce is a powerful opponent with strong technique and vast experience,” said Suslenkov.
“This is a serious challenge. I feel both excitement and full focus.
“Meticulous preparation and the right tactics to neutralise his strengths will be crucial.
“This is a chance to show my level and give the fans something to cheer about.
“Joyce is a strong, pressure-fighting heavyweight with heavy hands and a great deal of experience.
“It is an honour for me to box on the card headlined by Murat Gassiev, who is defending his WBA Heavyweight title against Tony Yoka.
