CAMEROON: Since assuming the presidency of FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto’o Fils has approached Cameroonian football with ambition, vision, and a desire to restore the nation’s standing on the international stage. Over the past four years, his tenure has seen moments of triumph and disappointment, reflecting both the potential and the challenges facing the Indomitable Lions.
On the men’s side, Eto’o’s leadership has produced some notable highs. Cameroon claimed third place at AFCON 2021 and secured gold at the Francophone Games in 2023, demonstrating the team’s competitive edge in regional tournaments. The Futsal team also shone under his guidance, finishing third at the 2025 Futsal AFCON. Yet, there have been struggles in major competitions, including early exits at the 2022 World Cup, AFCON 2023, CHAN 2023, and not making it to the 2026 WORLD CUP while several youth teams failed to qualify for key tournaments.
The women’s teams have experienced a similar pattern. While reaching the quarterfinals of AFCON 2022 and the round of 16 at the U20 World Cup 2024, they fell short in World Cup and Olympic qualifications and faced early eliminations at U17 competitions. Despite these setbacks, Eto’o has emphasized building a stronger foundation, promoting youth development, and creating long-term strategies to lift Cameroonian football to higher levels.
Overall, Eto’o’s four years have been a balancing act of progress and frustration. Historic successes coexist with missed opportunities, but the broader goal of structural improvement and sustainable growth remains at the forefront. As the Lions continue their journey, Eto’o’s commitment to nurturing talent and reinforcing Cameroon’s footballing identity signals that the next chapter could be even more decisive.
The Indomitable Lions may have stumbled at times, but their roar under Eto’o’s guidance continues to resonate with ambition, resilience, and hope.
