ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has introduced new measures aimed at strengthening financial discipline and improving accountability in the management of public funds across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The directives are contained in the 2026 Annual General Imprest Warrant, signed by Taiwo Oyedele and communicated through a Federal Treasury Circular issued by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
Under the new guidelines, the reimbursable imprest available to ministers and heads of government agencies has been reduced to N700,000, marking a significant cut in discretionary spending from public funds.
The circular stated that the move is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to enforce prudence, curb waste, and ensure that public resources are deployed strictly for approved official purposes.
In addition to the reduction in imprest limits, MDAs are expected to comply with stricter documentation and approval procedures before expenses can be reimbursed. The new framework also strengthens oversight mechanisms to improve transparency and accountability in government expenditure.
Officials said the measures are designed to promote efficient use of scarce resources amid ongoing economic reforms and increasing pressure on public finances.
The latest directive forms part of the government’s wider strategy to enhance fiscal responsibility, improve budget implementation, and ensure value for money in public sector spending.
