•Afenifere leader dies at 100, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, political activism and commitment to good governance
The death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, leader of the Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, at the age of 100 marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of political activism, public service and the struggle for justice and good governance in Nigeria.
Fasoranti, who died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, was widely respected as an elder statesman whose long life was defined by principled leadership, an unwavering commitment to public service and a deep concern for the political and social advancement of the Yoruba people and Nigeria.
His death has cast a shadow of grief over Ondo State, Yorubaland and the country, with Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa describing his passing as a monumental loss.
In a condolence message, Aiyedatiwa said the late Afenifere leader devoted his life to the development of Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, courage and selfless service.
“With a heavy heart but with total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing of our revered elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who departed this world at the glorious age of 100,” the governor said.
He described Fasoranti as a patriarch whose wisdom, integrity and fatherly guidance left an enduring imprint on the lives of the people.
According to the governor, the late statesman’s counsel and principled stand on justice and good governance would be sorely missed, particularly by those who looked up to him for guidance in the pursuit of a just and progressive society.
“His counsel, fatherly guidance and principled stand on issues of justice and good governance will be sorely missed. He lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints of honour and legacy for generations to come,” Aiyedatiwa said.
On behalf of the Ondo State Government and its people, the governor extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the entire state. He also prayed that God would grant the bereaved family and other mourners the strength to bear the loss.
A Life Anchored in Principle
Fasoranti’s significance extended beyond his longevity. At 100, he represented a generation of Nigerian leaders whose political engagement spanned decades of national transformation, constitutional debates and struggles over the country’s democratic future.
As leader of Afenifere, he occupied an influential position within the Yoruba socio-political movement, which has historically advocated restructuring, federalism, democratic governance and the protection of the interests of the Yoruba people within the Nigerian federation.
The organisation has remained an important voice in national conversations about the country’s political structure, the distribution of power among its constituent units and the need for accountable leadership.
Fasoranti’s leadership placed him at the heart of these debates, reinforcing his standing as a respected voice in the search for a more just and equitable Nigeria.
His public image was associated with integrity, courage and a willingness to stand by his convictions. These qualities earned him respect among those who saw him as a custodian of the ideals of responsible leadership and public accountability.
A Voice for Good Governance
Throughout his public life, Fasoranti remained associated with the pursuit of justice, democratic values and good governance.
For many admirers, his significance lay not merely in his position as an Afenifere leader but also in the moral authority that accompanied his years of public engagement.
In a political environment frequently marked by disputes over power, governance and national unity, elder statesmen such as Fasoranti provided a historical perspective informed by years of political experience.
His death therefore represents more than the loss of a centenarian. It marks the departure of a prominent figure whose life connected different generations of political thought and activism.
An Enduring Legacy
Fasoranti’s death leaves the Afenifere movement, Ondo State and Yorubaland mourning a leader whose name became associated with principled leadership and the pursuit of a better-governed society.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s tribute reflects the depth of the loss felt by those who regarded the elder statesman as a source of wisdom, counsel and inspiration.
His century-long life also provides an opportunity to reflect on the values he represented and the responsibility of succeeding generations to sustain the ideals of integrity, justice and public service.
As tributes emerge, the challenge for those he leaves behind will be to preserve these values and translate them into practical commitments to responsible leadership and the public good.
At 100, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti leaves behind a legacy that will be measured not simply by the length of his life, but by the principles he championed and the generations his example may continue to inspire.
