NIGERIA: The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has explained why it remained silent over the abduction of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while in captivity after being seized by bandits.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the DHQ said it withheld public comments on the incident because security agencies were still making efforts to rescue the retired senior officer alive.

According to the military, every operational resource available to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and sister security agencies was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return.

“The Defence Headquarters withheld public comment on his abduction in deference to ongoing rescue efforts by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and sister security agencies. Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” the statement said.

The DHQ expressed deep sorrow over Abubakar’s death, describing it as a tragic loss to the Armed Forces and the nation.

“The Defence Headquarters regrets to announce the passing of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Retired), who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction,” it stated.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria convey their deepest sympathies to the Abubakar family, his colleagues and all Nigerians.”

The military described the late officer as a distinguished soldier who served Nigeria with dedication in several key appointments, including as spokesperson for military formations and later as Director of Defence Information.

It said Abubakar made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the Armed Forces and several national assignments.

“His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement added.

The DHQ said the circumstances of his death had further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to intensify operations against terrorism, banditry and other criminal networks across the country.

“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” it said.

The military noted that ongoing operations had been intensified in response to recent abductions and other criminal activities, including the abduction of the late general.

“In response to the series of unfortunate abductions across Nigeria, including that of Major General Abubakar, ongoing operations have since been further intensified to bring perpetrators to justice and dismantle all terrorist networks threatening our nation,” the DHQ stated.

It assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would not relent until peace and security were restored and those responsible for terrorist activities were brought to justice.
