Ademola Lookman scored in the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, but it was not enough as Atletico Madrid lost the chance to win their first major trophy of the season.
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman drew Atletico level after Real Sociedad went ahead with virtually the first kick of the cup final.
Real Sociedad then regained the lead, before Atletico fought back to again draw level late on and take the Copa del Rey final to extra time.
There were no goals in extra time and so the contest had to be decided on penalties with Real Sociedad triumphant 4-3 in the shootout.
Lookman has been in inspiring form for Diego Simeone’s side since joining the Madrid side in January. The Nigerian international has proven to be a good buy, scoring crucial goals, making assists and contributing to the overall attacking play being demonstrated by Atleti in recent times.
His arrival has brought out the best in Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sørloth.
Only recently, Atleti knocked out one of the favourites Barcelona at the quarter final stage of the UEFA Champions League, 3-2 on aggregate, to qualify for the semi final of this year’s competition, where they’ll face Arsenal over two legs.
