ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has joined the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2025, themed “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, highlighted the crucial role of the media in fostering informed societies amid rapid technological advancements.

In his statement, Minister Idris called for a unified effort among government, media, and civil society to protect freedom of expression while embracing technology that supports democratic values. He reaffirmed the Tinubu Administration’s commitment to upholding press freedom as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

“A free and responsible media empowers citizens and holds leaders accountable,” the Minister said. He stressed the need for policies that promote media innovation and shield journalists from the potential misuse of technology.

“As part of this commitment, the Federal Government is developing a national policy framework on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the media sector. The framework aims to balance innovation with ethics, press freedom, and national security concerns.”

Minister Idris also warned against the dangers of AI-powered misinformation, deepfakes, and disinformation campaigns, which can be weaponized to exploit divisions and destabilize societies. He urged media organizations to remain vigilant and prevent their platforms from being hijacked by subversive elements, terrorists, anti-state actors, or ultra nationalist groups.

“Granting such elements access to the public sphere without scrutiny not only endangers national security but also erodes public trust in the media,” he noted.

The Minister concluded by urging all stakeholders to recommit to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s information ecosystem.

Nigeria’s observance of World Press Freedom Day underscores the country’s dedication to press freedom and responsible media innovation in the face of new technological challenges.
