2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Iwobi Begs Nigerians, Says Super Eagles Will Continue To Fight

Super Eagles winger, Alex Iwobi has said the team will continue to fight to secure the qualification ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Iwobi stated this during the post-match interview after the Super Eagles settled for a 1-1 draw on Day 2 of the FIFA World Cup qualifying African series against the Warriors of Zimbabwe in neutral Rwandan ground on Sunday.

Iwobi called on Nigerians to stick with the team saying that they would improve their game for better outings in subsequent matches.

According to Iwobi; “It’s really sad. We are professional enough and have enough quality on the side. As the coach said, the first half was good enough, second half was better. We have to look at that, analyze and see how we can improve ourselves

“I want to say to Nigeria fans to stick by us because we will continue to fight. We are disappointed because of the players we have. We are not going to dwell on this.

“We are going to push to the very end to make sure we qualify. We have to give credit to them, they are a good side. I feel like with the players we have, we should have done much better.”

The Warriors of Zimbabwe had led in the game when Walter Musona put them in front after 26 minutes with a 35-yard free-kick that eluded goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and sailed into the net.

Moses Simon’s stout shielding of the ball and good decision in the box allowed Kelechi Iheanacho to slam past the goalkeeper for Nigeria’s equalizer after 67 minutes in Butare.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resume in June 2024 with Nigeria hosting South Africa, current leaders of Group C, before travelling to an away game against Benin Republic.
