Super Falcons’ Oshoala, Babajide Slam Sanwo-Olu’s Silence On WAFCON Win

LAGOS, Nigeria – Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala and Rinsola Babajide have publicly expressed their disappointment over the Lagos State Government’s silence following Nigeria’s historic win at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Falcons defeated Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final on Saturday, July 26, to clinch their 10th WAFCON title.

Since the victory, accolades and rewards have poured in from different quarters. President Bola Tinubu gifted each player $100,000 and a three-bedroom house. Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, went even further, honouring seven players and a coach from his state with N30 million each and plots of land. Assistant coach Ann Chiejine also received N10 million.

But in Lagos, where Oshoala and Babajide trace their roots, there has been no sign of an official reception or gesture of appreciation.

Oshoala, clearly unimpressed, took to Instagram with a cryptic post:

“My Imo sisters dey hot oo …. God abeg #Lagosian.”

Babajide was more direct on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Was really looking forward to meeting Babajide Sanwo-Olu but Lagos State governor no wan invite us.”

She later edited the post slightly to:

“Lagos state governor no want invite us.”

This comes as a surprise to many, considering that Governor Sanwo-Olu had previously hosted Super Falcons players from Lagos after major tournaments. In August 2023, he welcomed Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Monday Gift after their World Cup campaign. Back in 2020, Oshoala also visited the governor to discuss the work of her foundation.

So far, the only acknowledgment from the Lagos State Governor has been a social media post where he congratulated the team:

“Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together.”

However, it seems that for stars like Oshoala and Babajide, words may not be enough.

The players and their fans are watching to see if Lagos will eventually step up to honour its daughters.
