Besiktas boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has applauded Wilfred Ndidi’s influence following the Nigerian midfielder’s solid display in Thursday’s 1-1 UEFA Conference League play-off first leg clash with Lausanne-Sport.
Ndidi, who made the switch to the Turkish giants this summer after an eight-year stint with Leicester City, played a key role as the visitors battled to a draw in Switzerland.
Arriving in Istanbul with a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable holding midfielders, the 27-year-old has quickly begun to justify the hype.
Solskjaer, who previously came up against Ndidi during his time managing Manchester United, believes the midfielder has brought a new dimension to the team.
“Wilfred has settled in brilliantly,” the Norwegian said after the match. “He’s a consummate professional, a fantastic person, and he gives us qualities we’ve lacked. I’m delighted to have him here – he’s already a leader and will be vital for us going forward.”
Having overcome an injury scare from his debut, Ndidi’s inclusion in the starting lineup highlighted his growing importance to Besiktas’ ambitions as they prepare for the decisive return leg in Istanbul next week.
