Five million riders, zero accidents: Lagos gov marks blue line milestone

LAGOS, Nigeria — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a 50 percent reduction in fares on the state’s Blue Line Rail service, effective Thursday, September 4, 2025, to commemorate the second anniversary of the rail system’s commercial operations.

The governor made the announcement on Thursday during his address at the ongoing GITEX Nigeria 2025 event held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

Launched in September 2023, the Blue Line Rail spans from Marina to Mile 2, serving as a critical component of the state’s push towards an integrated and efficient public transportation system.

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that since its inauguration, the Blue Line has transported over five million passengers without recording a single accident—an achievement he attributed to meticulous planning and operational efficiency.

“Trains now run every ten minutes, completing over 90 trips daily. Journeys that once took much longer are now faster and more convenient,” the governor said. “These milestones demonstrate what is possible when we pursue development with vision and commitment.”

The fare reduction, according to Sanwo-Olu, is both a celebration of progress and an invitation to residents who have yet to experience the service.

“To mark this second anniversary, I am pleased to announce a 50% reduction in fares on the Blue Line for tomorrow, Thursday, September 4, 2025,” he said. “If you have not yet experienced the Blue Line, I encourage you to take a ride and see what we have built together.”

He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing mobility in Lagos, stressing that efficient transport remains central to the broader vision of building a “Greater Lagos.”

“Our journey is far from over,” he added. “Step by step, we are creating a Lagos where moving around is easier, safer, and faster.”

The Blue Line is one of several rail projects under the Lagos State Mass Transit Master Plan, designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for residents in Africa’s most populous city.
