Oluremi Tinubu Says Governance Must Rise Above Party Lines, Urges Politicians To Put People Before Politics

First Lady seeks unity, grassroots focus at stakeholders’ meeting

…Traditional rulers demand constitutional role at Lagos engagement

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on political leaders across the country to put the interests of the electorate above partisan considerations in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement organised by her Renewed Hope Initiative in Lagos on Friday, the First Lady emphasised the importance of national unity and grassroots development, urging elected officials to transcend political divisions once elections are over.

“Party aside, once we win an election, people should put party aside and let’s run the government. The government is about the people,” she said. “By the grace of God, the Renewed Hope Initiative will help change the mindset, even in opposition states. We are all working together to ensure that this programme reaches the grassroots.”

The meeting brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, political stakeholders, and lawmakers in Lagos, with a focus on strengthening community engagement and fostering inclusive development.

Senator Tinubu reiterated her commitment to promoting peace, unity, and well-being across Nigeria through collaborative efforts with all stakeholders. She also pledged to review and address the requests presented during the meeting.

In his remarks, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the First Lady’s initiative, describing her direct engagement with religious and traditional leaders as a critical step in inclusive governance.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the timing—coinciding with the ongoing Isese Week, a celebration of Yoruba heritage—Sanwo-Olu praised traditional and religious institutions for their continued support through prayers and advocacy.

“Our First Lady has birthed new ideas and introduced a fresh level of governance using her office. Her initiative is touching lives and bringing hope, especially to the elderly and vulnerable,” the governor said. “She has engaged regional leaders across Nigeria with compassion, intellect, and experience, uplifting communities along the way.”

Also speaking at the event, the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, who represented other traditional rulers, commended Senator Tinubu for her efforts nationwide. He presented a joint list of requests, which included:

• A constitutional role for traditional rulers

• Enhanced welfare packages

• Youth empowerment and leadership development

• Promotion of girl-child education

• Legal recognition for Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs)

Oba Shotobi described the First Lady’s outreach as unprecedented and urged the federal government to act on the monarchs’ demands to further national development.

The Renewed Hope Initiative, spearheaded by Senator Tinubu, aims to deliver impactful social programmes, particularly targeting women, youth, and vulnerable groups across the country.
