WARRI, DELTA STATE, Nigeria – The grounds of the Olu of Warri’s palace came alive with echoes of national pride and sporting glory on Tuesday, as members of Nigeria’s legendary Atlanta ’96 Olympic gold medal-winning football team reunited for a novelty match in honour of His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III’s fourth coronation anniversary.
The symbolic encounter saw the former Super Eagles stars take to the pitch alongside youthful chiefs and sons of Warri, thrilling thousands of supporters, dignitaries, and traditional leaders in a festival of sport that bridged generations and celebrated unity under the monarch’s reign.
The match, held within the royal premises, served not only as an exhilarating spectacle but also as a testament to Ogiame Atuwatse III’s commitment to blending heritage with contemporary expression. Earlier in the day, His Majesty underscored his vision for holistic development with the commissioning of the Renewed Hope Mother and Childcare Hospital in Ugbuwangwe. The 80-bed facility, developed in collaboration with the Federal Government through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), represents a transformative step in maternal and child health in the region.
Equipped with modern medical infrastructure, the hospital is set to provide high-quality healthcare services to women and children, reaffirming the monarchy’s dedication to the well-being of its people.

The festivities also showcased a vibrant display of cultural preservation. In the palace courtyard, children participated in an Itsekiri language storytelling and recitation competition—an initiative aimed at fostering cultural pride and ensuring linguistic continuity among the younger generation.
