LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, says the state government is repositioning its tertiary education sector for greater effectiveness and alignment with the evolving needs of a digital economy, in line with the administration’s commitment to a brighter and more prosperous future for the state.
Sule stated this on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, while presenting the Ministry’s scorecard over the past year.
According to him, the state has intensified efforts in enhancing digital learning, participating in exchange programmes, and establishing collaborations aimed at modernizing the tertiary education system.
He revealed that, within the year under review, the state government: Rehabilitated 30 libraries across secondary schools to boost research culture and academic support, harmonised salary disparities across state-owned tertiary institutions to improve staff welfare, and initiated the upgrade of Lagos State University College of Medicine into a stand-alone University of Medical and Health Sciences, aimed at closing gaps in healthcare manpower.
The commissioner also affirmed that key institutions — Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) — continue to achieve strategic milestones. These include capacity-building for staff, collaborative research, programme accreditation, and infrastructural expansion.
Massive Investments in Innovation, IT, and Sports
Sule emphasised that the government has made significant investments in: infrastructural development, digital literacy and information technology, Innovation-driven learning, sporting activities, accreditation of academic and professional programmes by relevant bodies.
“We are committed to building a future-ready workforce by equipping students with the right tools and learning environments to thrive in today’s digital economy,” he said.
State’s Continued Priority on Education
Also speaking at the briefing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, highlighted the government’s unwavering support for the education sector.
He noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has done remarkably well in all facets of education — from primary to tertiary — and will continue to prioritize investment in the sector as part of its broader development strategy.
