Enyimba, Others Chase $4m As CAF Reveals Prizes For African Football League

ENYIMBA could win up to a princely $4 million if they win the inaugural edition of the African Super League.

The Confederation of African Football announced the prize money for the competition today, with at least $1m guaranteed for each of the eight clubs involved.

Nigerian champions Enyimba, who have won the CAF Champions League twice, are joined in the competition by Wydad (Morocco), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), TP Mazembe (Democratic Republic of Congo), Esperance (Tunisia) and Petro Atletico (Angola), Al Ahly (Egypt) and Simba (Tanzania).

The winners of the competition will receive $4m, the runners-up $3m and the losing semi-finalists $1.7m each.

The teams that lose out in the quarter-finals will each be paid $1m, according to CAF.

The AFL will start at the quarter-final stage, the clubs playing each other on a home-and-away basis.

The competition will kick off on Friday, October 20 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and will feature Simba SC and Al Ahly.

“The prize money is appealing and competitive as the winning club will only play six matches to win the substantial $4m,” CAF noted.

“The AFL is a CAF competition established in partnership with FIFA. One of the main objectives for forming the AFL is to ensure that the quality of African club football is globally competitive and that African football clubs are commercially viable. The AFL will also contribute to the development and growth of youth football talent on the African continent.

“CAF’s intention is that all the 54 Member Associations including the countries that may not have football clubs in the AFL should benefit and receive financial contributions from the commercial viability and success of the AFL.”
