LAGOS, Nigeria – PioneeringNigeria’sleadership in ‘Compliance Carbon Markets: The 80m Cookstoves Project’, the Federal Government and Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, and GreenPlinth Africa, will, this month, begin distribution of clean cookstoves to eight million vulnerable households in Lagos; with the state serving as the pilot scheme – as part of the initiative by the federal government to reduce carbon emissions.
The eight million earmarked for Lagos is out of the 80 million clean cookstoves to be distributed nationwide by the federal government.
The clean stoves are to be distributed across all the 57 local governments and local council development areas; while each of the councils will receive N1 billion annually for green development.
The initiative primarily aimed to build a greener, healthier, and more inclusive Lagos.
According to the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, at a press briefing to inaugurate the state and national working team for the distribution in Lagos, held at Alausa, Ikeja, in collaboration with the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy, with the theme: “Clean Cooking Access for Africa: Leaving No One Behind,” the partnership between the federal, state and GreenPlinth Africa, was a leap forward in the quest to build a greener, healthier, and more inclusive Lagos.
“The 80 Million Clean Cookstoves initiative represents a transformational opportunity to improve the lives of millions especially women and children by promoting clean energy access, reducing harmful air pollution, and curbing deforestation across vulnerable communities.
“Beyond its clear health and environmental benefits, this initiative is also an economic catalyst,“ Ope George said.
He added that the initiative will create over 35 million green jobs and reduce the reliance on firewood to cook by vulnerable households.
“The Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs Titilayo Oshodi, in her address “Pioneering Nigeria’s Leadership in Compliance Carbon Markets: The 80M Clean Cookstoves Project,” described the initiative as historic, game-changing project that will place Nigeria at the forefront of the compliance carbon markets under UNFCCC’s Article 6.4ER framework.
“The 80M PACM (Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism) Clean Cookstoves Project is not just the largest clean cooking initiative in the world; it is a bold economic, social, and environmental blueprint that will deploy 80 million highly efficient, clean cookstoves across Nigeria.
”It will generate 1.2 billion tonnes of compliance carbon offsets, create over 35 million green jobs, establish a forex-denominated, sovereign green endowment fund for sustainable development, and improve the health and well-being of millions, especially women and children,” she said.
She added: “Lagos State will serve as the anchor state for this transformative project. In partnership with the Office of the Special Adviser on OCCE and the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, MEPB, Lagos will spearhead the deployment of the first six million free clean cookstoves, with distribution set to commence on June 25, 2025, starting in Makoko.”
She said the initiative was the first in Nigeria in over 12 years to receive an endorsement from the Nigerian Climate Change Council, NCCC.
Oshodi noted that instead of firewood, beneficiaries will make use of waste, such as corn shaff, sawdust and others, to cook.
