The 32-year-old defender made 83 appearances for the three-time African champions, becoming one of the most consistent and respected figures in the squad during that period.
A commanding presence in defence, Troost-Ekong played a central role in Nigeria’s major tournaments over the years, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His leadership and composure were widely recognised across the continent, but it was his performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that cemented his legacy. At that tournament, he delivered some of the finest displays of his career, earning both the Player of the Tournament award and a place in the Team of the Competition.
In a tribute posted on X, CAF honoured the defender’s contributions, commending his impact on African football and his exemplary leadership for Nigeria. The continental body described him as a player whose influence extends beyond the pitch and praised his dedication throughout his international career.
