MOROCCO: Nigeria’s Super Eagles this Saturday night, December 27, 2025, won the battle of the Eagles, beating the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia 3-2 in Fes, Morocco, to qualify for the second round of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Nigerians, who beat Tanzania 2-1 in the opening Group C match, went into the lead in the 44th minute after Victor Osimhen headed in a beautiful cross from Ademola Lookman on the left.
Five minutes into the second half, skipper Wilfred Ndidi extended Nigeria’s lead after heading home a Lookman corner from the left.
Lookman himself tucked in an Osimhen pass in the 67th minute to make it 3-0.
Tunisia, however, soon staged a comeback, with Montassar Talbi scoring from a header from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner after being assisted by Hannibal Mejbri with a cross following a set piece situation in the 75th minute.
They further reduced the tally when Ali Abdi converted a penalty with a left footed shot to the high centre of the goal. The penalty was awarded after a VAR decision following a handball by Bright Osayi-Samuel.
All efforts made thereafter by the Carthage Eagles to equalize proved abortive as the Super Eagles stood firm till the blast of the referee’s final whistle.
