NIGERIA: A spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Alwan Hassan, has alleged that some ministers in Nigeria pay billions of naira to secure appointments and subsequently seek to recover their investments through public office.

Hassan made the allegation on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, reports Daily Post.

He claimed that the practice of paying for ministerial appointments predated the APC administration and was not peculiar to the ruling party.

“A lot of ministers pay billions to be appointed, and the first thing they think of is how to recoup that money after being appointed.

“It is the truth about our country and not just APC ministers; it started before the APC,” Hassan said.

He identified the alleged practice as one of the major factors contributing to corruption in public office, arguing that appointees who spend huge sums to secure positions may view their appointments as investments from which they must recover their money.

His remarks raise questions about the processes through which political appointments are secured and the implications for accountability and integrity in public service.

However, Hassan’s claims, as reported, did not identify the ministers allegedly involved, specify when the payments were made or provide evidence to substantiate the allegation.
