NIGERIA: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, a move the presidency says is aimed at improving coordination in Nigeria’s security system.
The announcement was made in a statement shared on Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on 𝕏. According to the statement issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the appointment reflects the administration’s plan to strengthen intelligence operations and collaboration among security agencies, reports Gwg.ng.
The presidency described Famadewa as a retired senior military officer with decades of experience in intelligence, counter-terrorism, and national security operations. It also highlighted his previous role at the Office of the National Security Adviser, where he reportedly contributed to the development of Nigeria’s intelligence coordination structure.
Part of the statement noted that President Tinubu believes the retired general’s experience would support efforts to improve homeland security and advance the administration’s security agenda.
Following the announcement, Nigerians took to social media to express mixed reactions over the creation of the new office and the appointment itself.
Reacting to the development, @AbdulrahmnBala questioned the relevance of the role, writing, “What’s the role of the NSA?”
Another user, @macburnertunes, also asked, “what’s the work of Ribadu and where is the office of Home Land Security, how can i access it.”
@occp1967 criticised the move, saying, “What they said — ‘We are creating the office of Special Adviser on Homeland Security.’ What it means — ‘We cannot touch the NSA because he knows too much.’”
Sharing a similar opinion, @BEazebuy wrote, “Another retired General as Special Adviser on Homeland Security?. Does Aso Rock need more advisers or actual action?”
However, not all reactions were critical. @okey_umeh expressed support for the appointment, writing, “May your reign and quest to rid the country of horrible people be successful.”
Also congratulating the retired officer, @ChineduOnye1234 said, “My General, I stand on your mandate. Congratulations; Commendable and and very deserving.”
Another reaction from @whyteworld_vp read, “So, they finally admit that the office of the NSA and NIA has failed. IT IS WELL.”
The appointment has continued to generate debate online, with many Nigerians discussing whether the new advisory role will strengthen the country’s security structure or simply add another layer to existing institutions
