OYO, Nigeria – In a deeply tragic turn of events, 22-year-old Feranmi Akin-Akinye — a promising graduate of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) — has been laid to rest following a fatal fall from the 26th floor of the historic Cocoa House building in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Feranmi, who was undergoing cybersecurity training at a firm based on the building’s eighth floor, reportedly fell to his death while attempting to mount a large wall banner — a task typically assigned to trained professionals equipped with proper safety gear.
According to a source close to the family who spoke under anonymity, Feranmi was asked by his employers to carry out the risky task, allegedly without adequate supervision or safety measures. “He was a respectful and humble young man. They took advantage of that humility and gave him a job he wasn’t trained for,” the source said.
The source further claimed the company tried to suppress the incident, allegedly rushing Feranmi’s body to an emergency ward posthumously and failing to promptly notify his mother, with whom he lived in the Meridian area of Apata, Ibadan. His father resides in the United States.
Attempts by a radio station within Cocoa House to document the aftermath were reportedly blocked, with the company allegedly covering Feranmi’s body before any photos could be taken.
Feranmi was buried on Tuesday by his home church, Winners Chapel. Grieving family members, including his father’s relatives, are reportedly consulting legal experts to pursue a case of corporate negligence against the company involved.
The loss of Feranmi has cast a somber shadow over Ibadan’s business district and raised serious questions about workplace safety and accountability within high-rise commercial properties in Nigeria.
